Never the Twain shall lose
This is kind-of a different poll for me
personally. It’s somewhat difficult for me to remove the art
from the artist, even if the "art" can only be
described as such charitably at best (for example, the Spice
Girls). This gets to what one defines really as "sexy"
– I mean, Shania Twain is certainly a babe, but her stuff
doesn’t kill me as much as, say, Chrissie Hynde (who didn’t
make the list, and whose singing always reminded me of oral sex
– probably the throaty quality of her voice and wide vibrato
– but I digress). The flip side of that is, of course, that
if you’re talking about quality of material as inseparable
from the person writing it, well, Joni Mitchell was a babe in her
day, and she’s one of the great singer-songwriters in pop
music history, but I get the feeling that foreplay with her would
be a week of literary conversation.
So – separate the message from the "medium",
as it were, and there you have it. I’m personally not
shocked by the top slot result. There were a couple of things
that struck me about this poll:
- The nominees represent a small-c catholic
musical taste and knowledge amongst you poll respondents.
Thanks for the suggestions. I mean, I didn’t even
think of Susanna Hoffs, and that was certainly a "I
could’ve had a V-8" moment on my part. I also
completely forgot that Samantha Fox "sings".
- The nominees also represent a small-c
catholic taste in women. Björk and Jewel are fairly far
apart in appearance, yet they’re both in the top
five. There’s either a future poll or a master’s
thesis in there somewhere.
- I suspect there were others of you who had
a tough time separating the medium from the message as
well. How else to explain the presence of Paula Cole (a
great singer and songwriter, but let’s face it, not
that gorgeous) or Sarah McLachlan (ditto)?
- You’re all younger than me.
Maybe next time we should narrow our focus
– best looking female artist with the most annoying voice (hands-down
Björk), or best looking artist with the least amount of talent (Britney
Spears), or best looking artist with the most talent (Sheryl Crow,
at least from this list); or perhaps the reverse – worst
looking with the most talent (Janis Joplin), worst looking with
the least musical talent (Yoko Ono), worst looking with the best
voice (I’d nominate Mama Cass).
In the meantime, thanks for the suggestions and
participation – you’re an interesting lot, you are.

Flatcat expressed one of my thoughts exactly. I
wondered how in the hell Paula Cole got on this list. Don't
misunderstand me. I am very grateful for all the noms I receive,
but I was a bit baffled by that one. And I can't use the
generational difference thing. She IS my generation.
I personally voted for Madonna. I remember when
I was a mere lad and those naughty pictures from her sordid past
appeared in Guccione's mag. I nearly fainted when I heard she was
going to be in there and I made some rather elaborate plans to
obtain a copy. Then when the issue came out, all of my friends
were horrified by her unkempt pits. I didn't care. I didn't think
they were very attractive but they didn't calm my raging hormones
as they seemed to do to others. I think this is the first time I
have ever admitted this fact. And what a great place to choose to
reveal it.

the starting lineup for the All-Century baseball team. We go to

Consider all around performance, concentrating especially on
power and durability. Just kidding. Vote for your choice and our

The Thursday poll will go to politics. Who was
the greatest president of the second half of the 20th Century? We
don't need noms for this one either. We will start with Harry S.
and end with William J. We just want to know who was the best.
