Everyman with a whip
Why do we all like Harrison Ford so much? I think maybe
because we want to know him. He has this quiet strength onscreen
that we wish we had. He gets into his share of impossible
situations like other action heroes. The difference is most of
the time I am not sure he will get out of them. Well, you know he
WILL, but there is a small doubt in your mind, because he is so
good at looking cluelessly brave.
- "Raiders" is in a class by itself. It
introduced a whole new generation to swashbuckling serial
movies. Forget the good vs. bad theme that was so obvious
an average snail could have gotten it. What did you
expect from Lucas and Spielberg anyway? No, the point was
that we had a hero we could root for, an enemy everyone
hated, and some kickass action sequences. That's all
there was. But that's all you need. I can't wait until
the Raiders series comes out on DVD and I will be first
in line when 60-something Ford dons the fedora and whip
again, if it ever happens.
- "Blade Runner" is now officially a cult movie
that has garnered more respect with age. I read somewhere
that Ridley Scott has said that Deckard was indeed a
replicant. Oh yeah? Well, what do YOU know Ridley?
Seriously, it doesn't matter if you believe him. That
movie was pretty good from my perspective before I ever
considered that Deckard may have been one. Can you
believe that movie came out the same year that Raiders
did? That seems against the laws of time and memory.
- "Star Wars" wasn't really a Harrison Ford movie
but it had to go in here because it launched him into
other roles. I personally believe "Empire" was
the best, but we will have to do a Best Star Wars Movie
to find out for sure.
- "Last Crusade" was great. Connery was perfect
and the story was probably the best of all three. But I
still think "Raiders" gets the nod overall.
- "The Fugitive" is more memorable for Tommy Lee
than Harrison to me. Unfortunately, he has played that
character in every movie since so maybe it was not a good
thing that he won the Oscar for it.
- I know Tuna voted for "Witness" because he said
he was gonna. Geez, I'm smart, huh? I haven't seen that
movie since it was originally in the theater. Didn't care
for it at the time. I was 14 and not very interested in
Amish country. Hell, I'm 29 now and still not very
interested in it. He got an Oscar nom for it though so he
must have been pretty good.
The rest of the movies didn't garner much support. The only
one that surprised me a bit was "Air Force One." Didn't
it make over $200 million? I thought it would get some more votes.
I heard that Lucas is not planning to do the last trilogy of
"Star Wars." That's a pisser, because I would like to
see Han and Luke and Leia in all their glory as older heroes and
heroine. I'm not sure Ford would do it. BUt it would be fun to
see.
