Brett Favre, "hair gel", and an evil zipper make comedy gold?
Obviously it does as "There's Something About Mary" took the crown for best comedy of the 90's. It is a deserving choice. It was laugh out loud funny but had some heart as well. You couldn't help but be happy at the end when Cameron Diaz chose Ben Stiller over the jock Favre. Like that would ever happen in real life, but hey, it's the movies.
Scoop's favorite, "Groundhog Day", finished in a strong second. I will let the good uncle tell you about this one in his Fun House thoughts. Although it was almost doubled in votes by "Mary", it did easily outdistance "My Cousin Vinny", which finished a surprising third. Does anyone think that Jack Palance really was drunk, as is the rumor, and read Marisa Tomei as the winner of Best Supporting Actress when she really didn't win? That seems logical because the Academy rarely gives out Oscars for comedic performances unless your name is Jack Nicholson and the movie is a comedy disguised as a drama.
I received a few emails asking why I didn't include "Clerks" or "Billy Madison" and the answer is that we had to cut it to thirty five and Kevin Smith and Sandler were already well represented. However, after this weekend, I think I should have included "Big Daddy". Okay so it's probably not one of the best comedies of the 90's but I thought it was very funny and surprisingly touching. Sandler has absoutely nailed the frat boy attitude and reminds you of the guy you either hated or wanted to be like, depending on your perspective. Hey, that guy's making like 22 million fish per movie now so he's obviously doing something right.
The top three of the poll will be included in the poll naming the overall best movie of the 90's. We will probably have two to three more themes at least and then we will do the big poll.
The next poll will hopefully keep the interest high but I don't know. Who is the greatest pitcher of the 20th century? I included all the nominees from Major League Baseball's All-Century team and a few more that I thought deserved inclusion. Baseball is the best sport for this type of thing because it makes for the best arguments. Could Bob Gibson have struck out Mark McGwire? Probably not, because they would both be playing for the Cardinals. Yuk yuk yuk. Seriously, it's fun to argue baseball. Vote away and I'll write Bud Selig and tell him who really should have made the All-Century team. He probably visits the Fun House anyway.
