Take the damn blue pill

That's what Keanu should have done. I would have been so much happier if he had just taken the blue pill. I know. He can't be the hero if he takes the blue pill and he is "the one" so he was destined to take the red pill. But as for me, I'm with the kids from South Park. I would rather see Brian Boitano save the world than freaking Keanu. I just don't really like him as an actor. Having said that, he was tolerable in both The Matrix and The Devil's Advocate.

Is it true that the Wachowski brothers had the whole sunglasses thing in the movie to hide Keanu's expressionless eyes? Sounds about right to me. They made some other killer decisions in that movie besides the sunglasses. The action sequences were fantastic. I read something on Harry Knowles' site that I thought was pretty accurate. Someone commented that the trailer for Mission Impossible 2, directed by John Woo, had elements that reminded them a lot of The Matrix. Harry said that wasn't surprising since The Matrix looked a LOT like a John Woo movie. I agree. Woo was doing this kind of stuff before the Wachowskis. I can't wait to see MI2. Woo is the man. He even made a Jean Claude Van Damme movie pretty good. Woo's talent is also evidenced in the fact that Face/Off finished third in this poll. And now he's working with Cruise and about a kajillion dollar budget. That combo should make for a good, if not great, action movie.

My choice, Terminator 2, finished in a strong second. Not bad for a movie that came out in 1991. The Matrix had a huge advantage in that it was still fresh in everyone's mind. That is why the nine year old T2's second place finish is so impressive. I went to see that movie with a buddy of mine and we left and got a twelve pack and rode around drinking and talking about the inconsistencies.of the whole time travel thing. If John Connor sent the Terminator back to protect him from the new T-1000, what would happen if the new guy succeeded? He would not be alive in the future to send Arnold back, then the new one would never come because he wouldn't have to. Confusing enough? Try it while drinking Bud Light. Anyway, I was really able to look past all that and really enjoy that movie. The special effects, which at the time were absolutely unbelievable, still hold up pretty well today. But my favorite thing about that movie was the casting of Robert Patrick as the bad ass T-1000. That was such a good move by James Cameron. And Patrick did a great job. I actually believed that he could kick Arnold's ass. And that guy can only weigh like 150 pounds soaking wet. Cameron and Arnold also had another movie, True Lies, finish in the top five.

Speaking of Cameron, is he EVER going to make another movie? I know it must be difficult to follow up the boat movie, but come on. After Titanic, he can probably get any studio to greenlight a $200 million budget.

Die Hard 2 finished outside the top ten and I thought that was a shame. I thought it was just as good as the first one. That movie was directed by Renny Harlin, who has to get my nomination for director who goes from great to terrible on any two given movies. I forgot to include The Long Kiss Goodnight in this poll, and my wife has given me an earful about it, but it was quite good. Along with Die Hard 2, he also directed what may be my favorite all time junk movie, The Adventures of Ford Fairlaine with Andrew Dice Clay. But....he is also responsible for the worst movie I have seen in a long, long time. Check out the plot of this movie. A corporate guy comes to a remote research facility to investigate after a minor mishap could cause really bad publicity and lawsuits. While there, he is amazed at the unbelievable progress the scientists have made. Then, nature starts to turn on the silly humans that tried to control it. To top it off, there is a really bad storm passing over which just makes things worse. I know what you're thinking. "Lawdog, you're crazy. You're thinking about Jurassic Park. And everyone knows Steven Spielberg directed that." Nope, this one is called Deep Blue Sea, although maybe they should have called it Jurassic Shark. And it contains what must be the most idiotic line in movie history. "We increased their brain mass fivefold. As a side effect, they got smarter." What the hell did they think would happen? I learned in third grade that man was more intelligent than other beasts because of his brain mass. And these people have multiple Ph.D's!!

One more observation. Check out the three Bond movies of the decade. They all finished right next to each other. I just thought that was strange.

Okay enough about the action, let's get to the next poll. We go from the adrenaline gland to the funny bone. Who is the best supporting character on The Simpsons? I got a ton of emails for this one and I appreciate all the nominations.

The Thursday poll is going back to old faithful. Who is the sexiest female musician? Flatcat will do the commentary for this one but you can send the nominations to me at lawdogusc@hotmail.com. This poll is not the musician with whom you would most like to spend an evening or the one you would most like to hear sing. Limit the nominations to those lusty ladies only. Now what you consider a lusty lady will make this fun. Don't be afraid to send in multiple noms. You don't need to limit yourself to the one nominee for whom you will end up voting.

Comments, suggestions, and nominees to lawdogusc@hotmail.com. You can also write to Flatcat at flatcat90@hotmail.com and the Gist at the_gist@hotmail.com.
